GEPCO (Gujranwala Electric Power Company) is handling 3098120 connections currently covering 6 Districts of Gujranwala including Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, and Mandi Bahauddin.
In 1960, the Government of Pakistan felt the need for an Independent organization for handling All Water resources including Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution matters, So The Department was formed as Water And Power Development Authority formally known as WAPDA.
At the start of 1980, WAPDA was the largest Power distribution network divided into eight central Area Electricity Boards (AEB). Gujranwala was one of the AEBs in different Electricity Boards handling Power distribution networks.
While having an eye on upcoming challenges, WAPDA was dis-integrated into two main sectors naming PEPCO & WAPDA. In this decision, WAPDA was restricted to only handle Water resources and Hydro-Generation matters while PEPCO (Pakistan Electric Power Company) was given the charge of GENCO (Thermal Generation Companies), NTDC (National Transmission and Dispatch Company) and DISO (Distribution Companies).
PEPCO was initially formed to be temporary in-charge for GENCO, NTDC & DISO, keeping in view that the PEPCO will be dissolved as these departments starts functioning to their best.
